Gateway not always needed

All Shelly Plus/Pro/Gen3/Gen4 devices can function as BLE gateway for Shelly BLU products. You only need a dedicated gateway if you don’t have other Shelly WiFi devices.

🔧 Home Assistant Integration

Shelly has native integration in Home Assistant - no MQTT required (but supported).

1. Connect your Shelly device to WiFi via Shelly app
2. Home Assistant finds it automatically via discovery
3. Click “Configure” and add the device
4. All entities are created automatically

For more control you can enable MQTT:

1. Go to Shelly’s web interface (IP address)
2. Settings → MQTT
3. Enable MQTT and enter your broker
4. Use Mosquitto in Home Assistant

Does Shelly work without internet?

Yes! All Shelly devices work 100% locally. You can control them via local IP, MQTT, or Home Assistant - no cloud required.

What's the difference between Plus and Pro?

Plus is for mounting behind switches, Pro is for DIN rail in breaker boxes. Pro also has LAN port and longer warranty (5 years vs 3 years).

Can I use Shelly without Home Assistant?

Yes. Shelly app (iOS/Android) works fine alone, and you can also use Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit (via Matter on Gen4).

What does Gen3 and Gen4 mean?

Gen3 has new 8MB chip, better performance and Matter support. Gen4 adds multi-protocol: WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee AND Matter in the same device.

Does Shelly BLU require a gateway?

Yes, for app control. But all Shelly Plus/Pro/Gen3/Gen4 devices can function as gateway - you don't need to buy a separate one.

Can I install Shelly myself?

Plugs and sensors: Yes. Relays behind switches: Only if you're comfortable with electrical work. When in doubt, use a certified electrician.
